2004 Slovakia World Fly Fishing Championships Fly Fishing Team USA traveled to the 24th annual FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship of Nations which will take place in the Slovak Republic from August 30th to September 5th, 2004.
Slovakia is a small country in the heart of Europe with three sides bounded by the Carpathy mountains and by the Danube river in the south. It consists of productive plains in the surrounding of Danube and of more than 2.500 m high shields of the smallest big mountains of the world – High Tatras. The country has approximately 6,000,000 inhabitants living in the area of 49.030 km2. The capital city is Bratislava. Slovakia is a country rich in natural beauty and sightseeing.
The rights of fishing for the event are secured by the Slovak Fishing Association, which has more than 100,000 members. Its seat is the town Žilina. It is possible to fish in the standing waters (e.g. barrages, gravel-barrages, old rivers arms“) and in the running waters of rivers Danube, Váh, Hron, Orava, Hornád, Nitra, etc.
The 2004 World Fly Fishing Championship, organized by the Slovak Fishing Association, will take place from August the 30th till September the 5th 2004 on the river Váh in the area of cities Dolný Kubín, Liptovský Hrádok, Liptovský Mikuláš and Ružomberok. The river has good conditions for fly fishing of salmon. The water of competition area are 20-30 m wide and about 1,5 m deep. It has stone ground, grass-banks with the poplars and willows especially in its middle and upper part. In the river occur fishes like: brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, dace, breaked carp.
Liptovský Mikuláš (the hosy city for the opening ceremony) is situated in the northern part of central Slovakia. It has 50 000 inhabitants and it is one of the most important travelling centres of the country. The city has a lot of cultural and historical sightseeing, natural beauty and caves around the city. On the barrage Liptovska Mara you can find suitable conditions for fishing of almost all species living in Slovak waters.
