Walter Ungermann - Chairman, Board of Directors Walter Ungermann is a graduate of Boston University. He fishes somewhere approximately 340 days a year and that is something even the most die hard fisherman can be envious of.
He operates a charter boat in Massachusetts in the summer and in Florida in the winter and has been a licensed captain since 1959.
At his home in Massachusetts he maintains four four drawer fireproof file cabinets full of exact notes detailing everything about every single day he has fished since he was nine years old. Each and every day that Walter is on the water, he records the weather, the catch, the fly, personal observations and such in a journal.
Walter was on the first U.S. Fly Fishing Team which went to Tasmania in 1988. He has been chairman of Fly Fishing Team USA since 1991 and has worked diligently ever since preparing a team to compete in the annual event.
In other fishing adventures of note, Walter has competed in the Gold Cup Sailfish Tournament and Nantucket Billfish tournament. The One Fly in New Zealand had him cross the Pacific one year in search of elusive wild trout. He has caught the most qualifying fish in the Martha's Vineyard One Night Striped Bass tournament in 1998. To round out his experiences, he has fished numerous times in the Don Hawley and Gold Cup Tarpon Tournament in Islamorada Florida.
He prefers to fish Icelandic salmon rivers but will fish in a polluted city duck pond if that's all is available.
His daughter once remarked: "It's a good thing my father can fish and breath at the same time".
He helped Jackson Hole, Wyoming resident Sam Lightner put on the World Fly Fishing Championships in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in 1997. This event has become the hallmark of all championships occurring since then. Even to this day, the team is barraged with comments from flyfisherman around the world, commenting on the great fishing, scenery and hospitality experienced in the USA back in 1997.
Each year in September, Walter marks his calendar to once again participate in the popular Jackson Hole One Fly Event. He has won the event individual award twice. He has been captain of Fly Fishing Team USA for many years and has the award of leading the winning team once. Walter is a popular personality in and around the Jackson Hole event.
